Is the "negotiation or transaction over everyday space" considered the Kampong style
of sharing?
Sharing for the wealthy society is intended to reduce excessive personal consumption and
increase environmental sustainability. It is said that in the US, "80% of the things in the house
are never used once a month, and the number of things has increased ten times in 30 years."
* 1 On the other hand, for the poor sharing is necessary because the more they share, the
more things they can access. In other words, sharing is a way to get many resources without
becoming an owner. The possessions of the objects or properties are not necessary.
Since the streets and alleys of high-density Kampung are spaces that do not belong to a
particular person, expanding the private space over the communal spaces is widespread. As a
result, the messy and dirty spaces that generally should be hidden within the private space are
exposed. Although it may seem chaotic at first glance, "daily negotiations over space" are
constantly being constructed. Even so, careful consideration is given to the circumstances of
each individual and family. However, every year during Independence Day, each person
withdraws from a non-owned street adjacent to the private space and cleans it, making it
confusingly clean. Most surprisingly, the street will be creatively and interestingly decorated
[20] for the celebration day.

In our monumental activity, we celebrated the Japanese students' marriage party who
were involved in the project together with the community [18].
Although very limited, there are some open spaces inside kampung, but unfortunately, all open
spaces have become the parking space for motorcycles. For the whole community, this is a
wicked problem almost impossible to be solved. However, when the community agreed to hold
the wedding party for the Japanese students, everybody sincerely agrees to collaborate and
temporarily transform the motorcycle parking into space for the event. The community also
helps to set up and beautifully decorate the alleys to become the parade route where the bride
and groom will go through [19]. The community work hand in hand with the students to
decorate the Kampung and children's present performances. In this wedding party, everybody
enjoyed preparing for the feast and party.
A motorbike with two sheep tied together came down the market. The sheep who spent
the night in the open space near the river were killed the following day, hung on a
clothesline, dismantled, and the guts were washed in the river. It was a great treat for
the banquet with the hands of the mothers in the community. The distributed food-filled
everyone's stomach. It was unbelievable in the middle of the big city of Jakarta. The
composition is the same as the completion ceremony of the traditional village Tololela.
Yes, it was not only the feast but also the dancing. Songs and dances are expressions of
sharing the happiness. In Tololela it was traditional dance; in Kampung Cikini it was the hybrid
of modern and traditional dancing. Dancing in Tololela was symbolic and natural; dancing skills
at Kampung Cikini achieved through practice and the learning process. Since Kampung Cikini is
a place where people from various ethnic groups live, the kids (who performed the dance
during the celebration) wore traditional outlook customs with a modern touch. They were not
decidedly connoted certain ethnic. They prefer to show multiple cultural identities rather than a
particular ethnic group, such as the case of traditional village in Tololela.
In addition to being implicit daily, "negotiations over space" also allow for temporary changes in
this way during many events. Even if the space is seemingly cluttered and disorder, it can be
said that sharing space is appropriately used depending on the time and the case. It secures
the space that the residents need. However, it is conditional that "negotiations over space" can
be mediated by the community. Kampung Cikini is a high-density kampung that barely shares
such space in the heart of Jakarta.
